What is Meditation?
Meditation is concentrating the mind one one thing only. With practice this can be achieved, though it is natural that the mind will wander. Do not be disheartened when this happens. Everyone can gain benefit from meditation, it just takes a little practice and perseverence. When the mind wanders, just gently bring it back to your chosen focus of concentration. This can be something as simple as focussing on our own breath or a candle flame. We also offer guided visualization meditations; these are currently available via the newsletter and will soon be accessible as MP3 downloads on the Shop page of this website.
Benefits of Meditation
Research indicates that meditation can bring the following benefits:
Lower oxygen consumption and decreased respiratory rate.
- Enhanced immune system (by increasing the activity of ‘natural-killer cells’, which kill bacteria and cancer cells.
- Increased serotonin production which influences mood and behaviour. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, obesity, insomnia and headaches.
- Increased self-confidence.
- Reduction in anxiety due to lowering the levels of blood lactate.
- Beneficial for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. closer to normal.
Meditation Guidelines
There are many ways to meditate, either sitting or lying down, with eyes open or closed. These variations to the practice will give different effects. However, there are some general guidelines which can assist:
Meditate in a clean, safe space where you will not be disturbed. In developing a regular practice you will gain greater benefit. Try to meditate in the same place, at the same time each day. Be realistic about the length of time you wish to meditate. In the beginning you may find that five minutes is sufficient. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend in meditation as your practice develops.
Posture is important; the spine should be erect, shoulders relaxed. If sitting try sitting on the floor cross-legged. Placing a cushion under the buttocks helps to raise the spine and release tension from the lower back. Alternatively, sit on an upright chair such as a dining chair, thus reducing the tendency to slouch. Keep the hands in a relaxed, comfortable position, feet on the floor, without crossing arms and legs. A good posture ensures comfort during meditation and a good flow of energy through the entire body.
If meditating lying down try to choose a time of day when you are less likely to fall asleep, the mind should remain alert. Again, keep the spine straight and the arms and legs relaxed.
Some people find it helpful to keep a meditation journal, to write down anything that was experienced during meditation. As the mind becomes clearer so intuition and clarity of perception are enhanced.
